TMT.Startups’10 Warsaw

Every start-up can be great. All it takes is to follow five commandments for success - the unbreakable rules of developing a start-up.

First - the pre-incubation. Is my idea good? What is it missing? Who can help me to verify its market potential and move it from the realm of dreams to the realm of concrete action planning and acquiring necessary resources?

Secondly - marketing and sales. Starting from the first day sales and marketing must be the main purpose and goal of any action taken. Everything must start with marketing and end with sales. Product or service is only a means to an end. Sale are the goal because they drive revenues which drive growth. Growth of the company and people.

Third - the team. People create value, build the business step by step, establish relations. Whom and at what stage to recruit, how to reward and motivate? It's great art, but also a set of skills that can be taught and learned.

Fourth - technology development. Dynamic growth must be driven by suitable engine - technology. The trick is turning talent into state of the art technology which in the appropriate stage of development will provide a market advantage to our company. You just need to be careful not to fall into a spiral of endless creativity which drains the company's resources. What counts are the real world applications and time to market.

Fifthly - money fueling growth. Preferably, financing should come from sales and revenues should grow rapidly. But not in every case it is possible. After we reach into the pockets of FFF then we should think about other external sources of funding. You just need to know when it is worth, how to raise it and what your new business partners are expecting of you. You should also have a plan B - it always helps.

It's only five important principles, but surprisingly start-up creators often forget about them and delay their success, or even do not reach it at all. Instead, we commit five common mistakes, ie 1) rely solely on our rown opinions and ideas, 2) focus mainly on the product, 3) develop the technology for too long or too expensive, 4) do not care for marketing and sales, and 5) seek money in the last minute, or when it is too late. Let's give our business a chance!
